Dr.
Osvaldo I. Lopez
is a graduate of Northwestern
University where he earned both the Bachelor of
Science and M.D. degrees. Following medical
school he completed an internship at
Northwestern's Passavant Memorial Hospital. He
then completed his specialty residency training
in ophthalmology at Michael Reese Hospital and
Medical Center where he also served as Chief
Resident. Dr. Lopez pursued further specialty
training, concentrating
in diseases of the cornea
at the renowned Texas Institute of Ophthalmology
at Baylor University.
Dr. Lopez's distinguished career as one of the
nation's leading corneal surgeons has seen him
called upon to share his vast expertise through
teaching and visiting professorships around the
world. He is also known as an innovator,
pioneering new surgical techniques and designing
numerous devices used for eye surgery. Dr.
Lopez remains at the forefront of corneal
surgery as attested to by the fact that he was
among the very first in Chicago to perform
IntraLase LASIK surgery and is among the leaders
nationally in the treatment of keratoconus
through the use of corneal implants. Dr.
Lopez's extraordinary achievements as a
physician and surgeon were formally recognized
by the State of Illinois, which awarded him
their highest honor, the Lincoln Medal for
Medicine.
Dr. Lopez's great efforts on behalf of
humanitarian causes have been acknowledged by
numerous nations and international
organizations. He continues to this day to work
tirelessly as hands on participant and organizer
of medical missions to underdeveloped and
impoverished countries throughout the world.
Dr. Lopez served as a member of President
Clinton's Health Care Advisory Committee and
served as an advisor on health policy to the
Hispanic Caucus of the Congress of the United
States. Dr. Lopez is on the faculty of the
University of Illinois Medical School. He is a
Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology
and a Fellow of the American Academy of
Ophthalmology. Dr. Lopez has served for more
than two decades as Chairman of the Department
of Ophthalmology of the Advocate Illinois
Masonic Medical Center and is the senior
founding partner of the Chicago Eye Institute.
